Introduction to Carbon Bricks

Carbon Brick is a type of neutral refractory material that can withstand high-temperature erosion. It is made from carbonaceous raw materials and a suitable binding agent. Its exceptional thermal shock resistance and low thermal coefficient of expansion make it a popular choice for building the furnace bottom and hearth in blast furnaces.

Carbon Brick Composition

Carbon Brick is composed of anthracite, coke, and graphite, with binding agents such as pitch, tar, and carbolineum. Anthracite, known for its low volatile content and dense structure, is used as an aggregate. Metallurgical coke is added with pitch as the binding agent to manufacture high-quality carbon bricks for sale.

Manufacturing Process of Carbon Bricks

The manufacturing process of Carbon Bricks is similar to that of other refractory fire bricks. However, it is crucial to prevent carbon oxidation at high temperatures. Therefore, all the firing for the raw materials and products must take place in a reducing atmosphere. Anthracite is calcined to remove volatile components, sulfur content, and moisture. This process improves the anthracite’s volume stability, mechanical strength, and inoxidizability. Coke is dried to prevent cracks during firing caused by excessive moisture. Pitch is fused and dried at a temperature between 120~160℃ until its moisture is lower than 0.2%.

Properties of Carbon Bricks

Carbon Bricks possess excellent thermal shock resistance, low thermal coefficient of expansion, high-temperature resistance, and resistance to erosion from acid, alkali, salt, and organic solvents. However, Carbon Bricks are susceptible to oxidation in the oxidizing atmosphere.

Specifications of Carbon Bricks

Carbon Bricks have several specifications that make them suitable for industrial use. They have high refractoriness and do not melt or soften even at very high temperatures. Their compressive strength is comparable to that of sticky bricks, and their load softening point is much higher than that of clay bricks. Carbon Bricks also have excellent slag resistance, wear resistance, and are not infiltrated by iron slag. They have a small expansion coefficient and high thermal conductivity.

Applications of Carbon Bricks

Carbon Bricks are widely used in the metallurgical industry, primarily in blast furnaces and hot blast stoves. Many blast furnaces’ furnace bottoms and hearths are constructed with Carbon Bricks. They are also used in the electroplating industry for pickling and plating baths, in the paper manufacturing industry for dissolving tanks, and in the chemical industry for reactive and storage tanks. Carbon Bricks are also used in the petrochemical industry for autoclaves.
